Kingston Basketball Academy’s Girl Got Goals program is helping young girls build confidence, develop skills and fall in love with basketball.
For sisters Tahlia and Peyton Johan, the program has been the perfect place to start their journey.
“Our mum chose Kingston — it looked cool, so I agreed,” said Peyton, while Tahlia added, “I just wanted to train with my sister.”
Since joining, both girls have thrived in the program’s supportive, girls-only environment.
“No boys goofing around,” Peyton said.
“Everyone focuses and supports each other,” Tahlia added.
Their coaches, Makayla and Ben, have played a big part in that growth.
“During games, Coach Makayla gives me one-on-one feedback,” Peyton said.
“And at training, when Coach Ben says, ‘I like that!’, it makes me feel proud,” Tahlia added.
Both girls have made huge progress since joining Kingston.
“I knew nothing about dribbling before I joined,” Peyton said.
“I’ve learnt my footwork when shooting,” said Tahlia.
Their favourite part of training? “Partner activities — offence and defence.”
Wearing the Kingston purple has given both girls a strong sense of belonging, and they’re excited to keep improving.
Thinking about joining?
“You should definitely join — you’ll learn new skills, but be prepared to work hard,” said Peyton.
“It might feel scary at the start, but it’s lots of fun,” Tahlia added.
