Demystifying Representative aka "Rep" basketball: A guide for new players and families

21 Aug 2025

If you’ve heard the term “rep” basketball but aren’t quite sure what it means, you’re not alone! This guide is designed to help families and players new to the world of representative basketball understand what it’s all about, how tryouts work, and where to find opportunities to get involved.

What is “Rep” basketball?

“Rep” (short for representative) basketball is a higher level of competition than local domestic or recreational leagues.

It’s designed for players who want to develop their skills, challenge themselves, and compete against the best from other associations across Victoria.

Rep teams are affiliated with local basketball associations and participate in competitions run by Basketball Victoria, most notably the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL).

Key features of rep basketball:

  • Higher level of play: More advanced strategic play.

  • Commitment: Regular training sessions, games, and a year-round season.

  • Pathways: Opportunities to progress to state, national, and even international levels.

What are tryouts?

Tryouts are the gateway to becoming a rep player. Each year, associations hold open sessions where players demonstrate their skills, athleticism, and potential. Coaches evaluate players through drills, scrimmages, and sometimes fitness tests.

What to expect at tryouts:

  • Skill assessments: Ball handling, shooting, defense and teamwork.

  • Game play: Short games or scrimmages to see players in action.

  • Attitude & effort: Coaches look for commitment, coachability, and a positive attitude.

When are tryouts?

Tryouts typically take place in October, with some clubs requiring pre-registration. It’s important to check with your local association for exact dates and requirements.

Where to find tryout information

For the most up-to-date tryout dates and registration details, visit each club’s website or social media pages:

If your local club isn’t listed here, a quick search online or a visit to the Basketball Victoria website will help you find the right association.
